Universal Construction out of Syracuse, NY – We do quite a few additions each year; most of the additions that we complete are 3 season rooms, sun rooms, enclosed porches, etc but we also build additions to expand bedrooms, kitchens, and even increase your upper floor space by way of installing or expanding a dormer or dormers. The question is this, should you hire a construction company to build an addition to your home? Well there are a few things to consider and I’m sure you’ve already considered at least a few but let’s get right into it:

How long will you be staying in your home?

If you’re going to be in your home a long time and you’re looking for added space then it is a no brainer. Get your addition built but make sure to use a reputable & licensed construction company or contractor. We are one of the highest rated construction companies in the area we service (in and around Syracuse, NY) and we like to point that out to all of our potential clients.

Why are you building the addition or why do you want an addition built?

If you’re looking to build the addition simply because you think it may increase the value of your home and you’re looking to sell right after it is built, I don’t think you’d be getting the best bang for your buck. I will get into the costs of building an addition below but the per square foot price to build an addition to your home is usually HIGHER than the square foot price to build a new home. It’s crazy, I know!

Are you planning on selling your home and will this increase the value of your home?

If you’re planning on staying in your home for a little while, maybe a few years and you’re in an up and coming market then adding an addition to your home is definitely something to consider. Overall the biggest factor is the market conditions, if you’re home is in a less than desirable neighborhood then the only time you should think about adding an addition is if you’re considering moving and converting the home into a multi family home!

HOW MUCH DOES AN ADDITION COST?

I’ll get right to the point, an average addition costs about $150 per square foot. That includes prepping of the footers, slab, or pyles, framing, flooring, sheathing the walls, constructing the new roof, insulation in the floor, walls, and ceiling, 110 electrical service with about 8 outlets, 2 light fixtures, and 2-4 windows, drywall, baseboard, paint, and flooring such as carpet or laminated vinyl.
